What drives the total cost?

Six factors that separate a $500 project from a $5,000 one.

Carpet quality

Fiber type (nylon, wool, polyester) and face weight drive the biggest share of cost.

Room size & shape

Larger and irregular rooms need more material and cause more waste.

Installation labor

Skilled installers cost $0.50–$2.50/sq ft. Stairs and closets cost extra.

Furniture & removal

Moving furniture ($50–$200 flat) and removing old carpet ($0.25–$1/sq ft) add up.

Pattern & seams

Patterned carpet needs 10–15% more material to match seams.

Padding choice

Upgrading padding from standard to memory foam adds $0.30–$0.60/sq ft.

How to measure for carpet

Three common room types — three simple methods.

Rectangular room

  • Measure length and width at the longest points.
  • Include closets and doorways.
  • Multiply length × width = square feet.
Example: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft

Irregular room (L-shape)

  • Split into two rectangles.
  • Measure each rectangle separately.
  • Add the two square-foot totals together.
Example: 10 × 12 = 120 + 8 × 6 = 48 = 168 sq ft

Multi-room project

  • Measure each room individually.
  • Add all areas together.
  • Enter the grand total in “Total sq ft” mode.
Example: 3 bedrooms + hall = 540 sq ft

What is a waste factor?

Carpet almost never fits exactly in a room. Between pattern matching, seaming, and trimming around doorways, some material always goes to waste. A waste factor tells the calculator how much extra to add so you don’t run out.

For a simple rectangular bedroom, 5% is usually enough. For a typical living room with doorways and a patterned carpet, 10% is the standard recommendation. Stairs and very irregular rooms can need 15–20%.

Recommended waste factors

5%Simple rectangular rooms, no pattern.
10%Standard rooms with doorways (recommended default).
15%Irregular shapes, hallways with many cuts, low-pattern match.
20%Stairs, patterned carpet, or very complex layouts.

DIY vs professional install

Carpet installation has a steeper learning curve than tile or laminate. Here’s how the two options compare.

Professional installation

  • Adds $0.50–$2.50/sq ft to the project.
  • Done in a single day for most homes.
  • Workmanship warranty (usually 1–5 years).
  • Correct stretching prevents wrinkles and premature wear.
  • Includes tack strips, seaming, and trim work.

DIY installation

  • Saves the labor fee (minus tool rental).
  • Requires knee kicker, power stretcher, and carpet knife.
  • A 120 sq ft room takes 4–8 hours to install well.
  • Stretching errors cause ripples that are visible after a few months.
  • Best reserved for closets, small bedrooms, and basements.

How to save on your carpet project

Seven proven ways to lower the total without sacrificing quality.

Get three written quotes and compare line-by-line — not just the total.
Ask about mill specials and off-season discounts (carpet sales are heaviest Jan–Feb and Sep–Oct).
Move your own furniture to save the $50–$200 moving fee per room.
Remove and dispose of old carpet yourself (saves $0.25–$1.00/sq ft).
Choose a carpet style that doesn’t require seam matching to reduce waste.
Buy roll ends or discontinued styles — often 30–50% off.
Upgrade padding instead of carpet — padding impact on feel and wear is bigger than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common carpet installation questions.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

A typical carpet installation costs between $3.50 and $11.00 per square foot, including carpet, padding, and labor. For a 12×10 ft room (120 sq ft), that’s roughly $500–$1,400 depending on carpet quality. Use the calculator above for an exact estimate based on your specific carpet and room.

Does the price include padding?

Not always. Padding is usually $0.30–$0.80 per square foot and is purchased separately from the carpet itself. Quality padding extends carpet life by 50% or more, so most installers strongly recommend it. Check the “Include padding” box in the calculator to add padding cost to your total.

How much extra carpet do I need to buy?

Plan for 5–20% more carpet than your room area to account for seams, cuts, and waste. A simple rectangular room needs 5%. A standard room with doorways needs 10%. Irregular rooms, stairs, or patterned carpet can require 15–20%. The calculator handles this with the waste factor dropdown.

Is it cheaper to install carpet myself?

DIY installation can save $1–$2 per square foot in labor, but you’ll need specialized tools (knee kicker, power stretcher, carpet knife, seam iron) which cost $150–$300 to rent or buy. For small rooms, professionals are usually better value because errors in stretching or seaming are hard to fix.

How do I measure a room for carpet?

Measure the length and width of each room in feet at the longest points (including closets and doorways). Multiply length × width for square feet. For odd-shaped rooms, split into rectangles, measure each, and add the areas. Always add a waste factor of 10–15%.

What’s the labor cost to install carpet?

Professional carpet installation typically costs $0.50–$2.50 per square foot in labor. Simple rectangular rooms on ground level are at the low end. Stairs, multiple rooms, and carpet removal add cost. Most installers have a $200–$400 minimum job charge.

Do I need to remove the old carpet first?

Yes — old carpet and padding must be removed before new carpet is installed. Installers charge $0.25–$1.00 per square foot for removal and disposal. You can save by removing it yourself, but you’ll need to dispose of it (bulk trash pickup or haul to a transfer station).

How long does carpet installation take?

A single average-sized room (120 sq ft) takes 2–4 hours including prep, stretching, and trim. A whole home takes 1–2 days. Plan for furniture to be moved 24 hours in advance and the space to be empty during install. New carpet also needs 24 hours to off-gas before heavy use.

What’s the best carpet for each room?

Bedrooms: soft plush or frieze (20–40 oz face weight). Living rooms and hallways: tough Berber loop or textured cut pile (40–60 oz). Basements: low-pile or commercial-grade with moisture-resistant padding. Stairs: dense, short cut pile that resists matting.

Is carpet installation taxable?

It depends on the state. Some states tax only the carpet (material), others tax labor too, and a few exempt all home improvements up to a certain dollar amount. Ask your installer for a written estimate that breaks out materials vs labor separately so you can verify the tax.
