How to use this gold calculator

This tool combines two essential calculators for precious metals: a weight converter for gold, silver, and platinum, and a karat purity calculator for gold jewelry.

1. Weight Converter

Convert between troy ounces, regular ounces, grams, kilograms, and pounds for gold, silver, or platinum. Select your metal, enter any weight, choose a unit, and see all conversions at once.

2. Gold Purity Calculator

Determine the pure gold content in jewelry or scrap gold based on its karat rating. Enter the total weight, select the karat (9K through 24K), and get the exact pure gold and alloy amounts.

Understanding gold weight measurements

Gold is measured in troy ounces, which are different from the regular (avoirdupois) ounces used for most everyday items.

  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
  • 1 regular ounce = 28.3495 grams
  • 1 troy ounce = 1.09714 regular ounces

A troy ounce is about 10% heavier than a regular ounce. When buying or selling gold, always verify whether the price is quoted in troy ounces or regular ounces.

Why troy ounces? This measurement system dates back to medieval Troyes, France, and has been the global standard for precious metals for over 500 years.

Gold karat system explained

The karat system measures gold purity on a 24-point scale. Here’s what each karat level means:

24K Gold (100% pure)

  • Pure gold with no alloy metals
  • Too soft for most jewelry
  • Used in investment bars and coins
  • Bright yellow color

22K Gold (91.67% pure)

  • Common in Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry
  • Good balance of purity and durability
  • Rich yellow color

18K Gold (75% pure)

  • High-end jewelry standard
  • Durable enough for daily wear
  • Available in yellow, white, and rose gold

14K Gold (58.33% pure)

  • Most popular in the United States
  • Excellent durability
  • More affordable than 18K
  • Slightly lighter color

10K Gold (41.67% pure)

  • Minimum legal standard in the US
  • Most durable gold alloy
  • Most affordable
  • Pale yellow color

9K Gold (37.5% pure)

  • Common in the UK and Europe
  • Budget-friendly option
  • Very durable
  • Pale color with hint of yellow

What are the other 25–58% made of? Gold is alloyed with metals like copper, silver, zinc, nickel, or palladium to increase hardness and change color (white gold, rose gold).

How to calculate gold value

To estimate the value of your gold:

  1. 1. Weigh your gold using a jewelry scale for accuracy.
  2. 2. Identify the karat (look for stamps like “14K” or “585”).
  3. 3. Calculate pure gold content using the purity calculator above.
  4. 4. Check current gold price (price per troy ounce on a live spot-price source).
  5. 5. Multiply: Pure gold weight × current price = estimated value.

Example:

  • • You have a 10-ounce 14K gold bracelet
  • • Pure gold content: 10 × 0.5833 = 5.833 oz
  • • Current gold price: $2,050 / oz
  • • Estimated value: 5.833 × $2,050 = $11,957.65

Actual selling price may be 70–95% of this value depending on the buyer (pawn shop, jeweler, refiner).

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a kilo of gold?

A kilogram of gold equals 32.1507 troy ounces or 35.274 regular ounces. This is the standard “kilobar” size used in precious metals trading.

How many ounces of gold are in a gold bar?

It depends on the bar size. A Good Delivery Bar holds 400 troy oz (12.4 kg) and is used by central banks. A kilobar is 32.15 troy oz (1 kg), a 100 oz bar is 3.11 kg, and a 1 oz retail bar is 31.1 g.

How much pure gold is in 14K gold?

14K gold contains 58.33% pure gold and 41.67% other metals. If you have 10 ounces of 14K gold, you have 5.833 ounces of pure gold.

What's the difference between troy ounces and regular ounces?

A troy ounce (31.1035 g) is about 10% heavier than a regular avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). Gold and other precious metals are always quoted in troy ounces. 1 troy oz = 1.09714 regular oz.

Is 18K gold better than 14K gold?

It depends on your needs. 18K is more pure (75% gold), has a richer yellow color, and a higher market value, but is softer. 14K is more durable, more affordable, and better for daily wear. For investment 18K is more valuable; for everyday jewelry 14K is more practical.

How accurate is this calculator?

Our calculator uses industry-standard conversion rates accurate to 4 decimal places. For official transactions, always verify weights with certified scales and assayers.

Can I use this for silver or platinum?

Yes. The weight converter works for gold, silver, and platinum. The karat purity calculator is specific to gold. Silver is typically measured in fineness (for example, .925 sterling silver = 92.5% pure).

What does “troy” mean in troy ounce?

The term comes from Troyes, France, where this measurement system was standardized in medieval times. It has been the global standard for precious metals for over 500 years.

Results are for general reference and education. For buying, selling, or insuring gold, verify weights on a certified scale and work with a reputable assayer or licensed dealer. Market prices fluctuate and buy-back offers typically range from 70–95% of calculated metal value.
