How Many Work Hours Are in a Month?

The short answer: 173.33 hours for a 40-hour week. The longer answer — and the hours for every other schedule — is below.

Quick answer

A standard 40-hour work week equals 173.33 work hours per month. The math:

(Weekly hours × 52 weeks) ÷ 12 months
(40 × 52) ÷ 12 = 2,080 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours/month

A common mistake is assuming 4 weeks × 40 hours = 160 hours. That undercounts because the average month has 4.333 weeks, not 4. Payroll, HR, and salary-to-hourly conversions all use the 173.33 figure.

Monthly Hours Reference Table

Find your weekly schedule and read across for the monthly equivalent. All figures use the (Weekly × 52) ÷ 12 formula.

Hours / weekHours / month
20 hrs86.67 hrs
30 hrs130.00 hrs
35 hrs151.67 hrs
40 hrs173.33 hrsstandard
45 hrs195.00 hrs
50 hrs216.67 hrs

Figures are rounded to two decimal places. Exact values: 20 hrs → 86.6667, 30 hrs → 130, 35 hrs → 151.6667, 40 hrs → 173.3333, 45 hrs → 195, 50 hrs → 216.6667.

How to Calculate Work Hours in a Month

There are two ways people try to answer this, and only one is right.

Wrong way

4 weeks × 40 hours = 160 hrs/month

Assumes every month has exactly 4 weeks. It doesn’t — months average 4.333 weeks, so this undercounts by about 8%.

Right way

(Weekly × 52) ÷ 12 = Hours/month

Spreads the full 52-week year evenly across 12 months. This is the figure every payroll system and HR department uses.

Why 4.333 weeks per month?

A year has 52 weeks. Divide 52 by 12 and you get 4.333 weeks per month on average. Some months have 4 full pay-periods and some have 5, but across a full year it always averages to 4.333. Multiplying that by your weekly hours gives the monthly equivalent:

  • 4.333 × 20 = 86.67 hrs/month
  • 4.333 × 35 = 151.67 hrs/month
  • 4.333 × 40 = 173.33 hrs/month
  • 4.333 × 45 = 195.00 hrs/month

It’s the same math as (Weekly × 52) ÷ 12, just rearranged. Use whichever version is easier for you — they always produce the same answer.

Frequently asked

A full-time employee working 40 hours per week averages 173.33 work hours per month. That figure comes from taking 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year, then dividing by 12 months. The number stays constant even though some months have more calendar days than others, because it smooths the 52 weeks evenly across the year.

A work month is 173.33 hours (not 160) because there are 4.333 weeks in the average month, not exactly 4. Multiplying 4 weeks × 40 hours = 160 undercounts the true annual total. The correct math — 2,080 annual hours ÷ 12 months — yields 173.33 hours, which is the figure payroll, HR, and salary-to-hourly conversions all use.
